Covert Action Wiki

Hi. My name is Headrock and I started this Wiki. I've been meaning to write something to explain the reasons behind this, and what I'm hoping to achieve, but I've been so preoccupied with actually adding content that it just hasn't happened yet. But hey, you gotta start somewhere.

I'm making this Wiki because someone had to. Covert Action is a very, very old game, but it is nonetheless one of the games I've always been returning to every once in a while, not just for "old times' sake", but because I genuinely think it is one of the most interesting games I've ever played.

But why does it need a Wiki? To me, there are two reasons:

  1. There is so little information about this game left anywhere. That in itself warrants pooling together what we do know, because the internet = knowledge (despite what some people want to pretend).
  2. Every time I play the game, I need to rely on my memory to tell me how to play, which is terribly annoying. Writing down all this stuff is like a guide to myself (and others) on how to play the game. This is especially important because the manual for this game doesn't actually exist anywhere that I could find (except in German...)
  3. Covert Action is a game that is incredibly full of potential. It is also, unfortunately, full of various flaws which, while they don't prevent playing the game through without problems, do detract from the ingenious concept. I think that game designers, myself included, can learn a whole lot from this game, both good and bad. Perhaps as a result we might see games like this made today, maybe even a remake. Having this information here on this wiki means people can draw ideas from it, learn how the game operates, and therefore be able to reconstruct it or something similar to it in the future.

So I hope people are actually going to find this Wiki someday, maybe there's another Covert Action fan out there somewhere who'll one day read this. And if not, oh well, I enjoyed writing this wiki, and will hopefully some day have the time and energy to do something about it.
